What to say when someone’s dog or cat dies
In person or on the phone, short is kind. Any of these is enough:
- “I’m so sorry about Max. I know how much you loved each other.”
- “I’m going to miss seeing Max at the door.” If you knew the pet, one small memory says more than anything else.
- “Do you want to tell me about Max?” Most people want to talk about their pet, and almost nobody asks.
- “I’m thinking of you. No need to reply.” For a text, the last part takes the pressure off.
What not to say
- “It was just a dog.” To them it was family. Anything that shrinks the loss hurts, however kindly it is meant.
- “You can always get another one.” A new pet is not a replacement, and the thought can feel like a betrayal.
- “At least he had a long life.” Any sentence that starts with “at least” asks them to grieve less.
- “I know exactly how you feel.” Even if you have lost a pet too, keep the focus on theirs.
- “Everything happens for a reason.” It rarely comforts, and it can sound like a judgment.
- “What happened?” or “Couldn’t the vet do anything?” Questions about the death make them relive it, and can stir up guilt. Let them tell you if they want to.
- “Let me know if you need anything.” It puts the work on them. Offer one specific thing, or simply say you would love to hear stories about the pet.
When to send it
- A text on the first day is fine. Send the card within a week or two.
- It is never too late. A card a month later can mean more, because by then most of the support has faded.
- Mark the date. A short note a few weeks later, and on the anniversary, tells them you remember too.

Questions
What should I write in a pet sympathy card?
Say you are sorry, use the pet’s name, and add one true thing: a memory of them, or what they meant to their person. Two to five sentences is enough. Leave out anything that starts with “at least”.
Is it okay to send a sympathy card when a pet dies?
Yes. For many people a pet is family, and the loss is real grief. A card says you understand that, and most people keep the ones they get.
What do I write if I never met the pet?
Don’t pretend you did. Speak to what the pet meant to your friend: “I never got to meet Clover, but I feel like I know Clover from every story you told me.”
What do I write if the pet was put to sleep?
Never question the decision. If you mention it, call it what it was: “Letting them go was the last kind thing you could do.” Many people feel guilt afterwards, and those words help.
How long should a pet sympathy message be?
Two to five sentences for a card, one or two for a text. Short and true reads better than long and general.
Is the sympathy message writer free?
Yes. It is free to use, with no account and no email address needed. An email is only asked for if you want a check-in reminder.
Do you keep what I write?
No. What you type is used once to write your messages and is not saved. If you ask for a check-in reminder, we keep your email, the pet’s name and that one message until the reminder is sent, then delete them.
What can I give someone whose pet has died?
A handwritten card matters most. Other gifts people keep: a framed photo of the pet, a donation to a shelter in the pet’s name, a plant for the garden, or a personal memorial song from FureverSong, written and recorded from what you know about the pet, with a memorial page you can send them. See how it works.
